Developing Cultural Humility

  1. Assess one’s own culture and self-reflect on your own bias in the context of systemic racism
  2. Value diversity (including, but not limited to: intersectionality, LGBTQ+, disability, and various nationality communities)
  3. Manage the dynamics of differences
  4. Adapt to diversity
  5. Integrate institutionalized cultural knowledge

Recognizing One’s Own Culture
(Values, norms, expectations)

  • When was the last time you had to think about you identity?
  • When watching TV or a movie, how likely are you to watch shows whose characters reflect your identity?
  • How diverse is your social media feed?
  • How diverse is the community in which you live?
  • How do you feel when you are in a community that is different from your neighborhood?
  • if you recognize you privilege, what did you do with this realization?
  • How do I ensure that my classroom practices are equitable?
  • How do I differentiate instruction to support different learners I teach?
  • How am I considering culture and context in my instruction?
  • Who is receiving my labeled praise?
  • Do I regularly self-assess my cultural biases?
  • Am I seeking opportunities to learn how to develop cultural humility?
  • Are all students in my classroom represented in my classroom art and decorations?
  • How do I respond when others in my school or classroom are treated differently based on their identity? Do I have a plan ahead of time?
